2.2.3 No Timing
Timing must not be an essential part of events or activities, except for real-time situations.

Success criterion
Conformance level
Enhanced accessibility — beyond the legal minimum.
What it means
At Level A (2.2.1), timing limits must be adjustable. At Level AAA, timing must not be essential at all. If a task can be completed, it should be completable without any time pressure.
The only exception is for non-interactive synchronised media (video playing in real time) and real-time events where timing is inherent to the activity.
In practice
Remove countdown timers from forms and checkout flows entirely.
For tests and assessments, consider whether timing is genuinely necessary. Many tests can be completed without time limits with no loss of validity.
Common failures
- Online exam that cannot be taken without a countdown timer
- Booking form that times out regardless of whether an extension has been requested
AXS Audit
