2.5.1 Pointer Gestures
All functionality that uses multi-pointer or path-based gestures must also be operable with a single pointer.

Success criterion
Conformance level
Essential baseline — must meet for any compliance.
What it means
Multi-finger gestures (pinch to zoom, two-finger swipe) and path-based gestures (drawing a specific shape or swipe direction) require fine motor control that some users do not have. People who use single-switch access, mouth sticks, or head pointers can typically only operate a single pointer at a single point.
Any feature that requires a complex gesture must have a single-pointer alternative, unless the multi-pointer path is essential to the function.
In practice
Map sliders must have keyboard controls or single-tap alternatives alongside the pinch-to-zoom gesture.
Custom swipe navigation must have tap-based next and previous buttons alongside it.
Drawing or signature tools that require complex gestures should offer a single-point alternative or a typed input option.
Common failures
- Interactive map with zoom only accessible through pinch gesture, no plus and minus buttons
- Carousel navigable only by swiping with no button alternative
